Going Solo and the social stigma attached to it

Traveling solo can be one of the most exciting and eye-opening experiences. It offers ample opportunities for self-reflection, self-reliance, growth and boundless freedom.

It can also be horrible and tiresome, especially if you’ve never traveled solo before. And also attached to it, is the social stigma.

The Social Stigma

Its not you, its them – The Society! It always wants you to be one of them and looking down upon you condescendingly. Solo travelers are actually seen as Introverts or reticent people who are wanderers. Though 2019 did brought in a wave of people traveling solo. So much so that businesses and places now offer special crafted packages for Solo travelers.

You can never explain the travel to your family or friends. Here are some of the questions I get to answer every time I say the holy word “Solo”:

I have met many well travelled blithering idiots.

The kind that think your life is worth much less if you didn’t move to America for a summer, travel the Asias with a caboodle of college buddies. If you didn’t enlighten yourself mid train ride across Western Europe, country by country growing ever wiser. The kind of folk that did will remind you with an insightful quote under a picture of their arse on a beach in Australia that Life is a book, and if you don’t travel, you read only one chapter. And to be honest, that’s simply untrue.
